The DEC opened its very first public and family archery range.
The Saratoga Sand Plains Archery Range is located in the town of Wilton, Saratoga County. The shooting range includes 16 targets ranging from five to 50 meters, eight adult lanes, four youth lanes and four lanes accessible by an elevated platform. The raised platform is ideal for hunters to practice shooting that simulates what it is like to shoot from a tree. It allows hunters to practice shooting from certain yards and angles, promoting more secure shot placements.
Archers using the raised platform should use a full body harness and connect to the platform carabiners. The range was funded by the New York State Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration Program and the City of Wilton. The area has been cleaned up by the city and has a 50 year old archery range. There are 16 targets, which include eight adult lanes ranging from 15 to 50 meters and four youth lanes ranging from 5 to 20 meters.
Bow arrows weighing 30 pounds or more can only be shot at targets in the adult shooting range. Bow arrows under 30 pounds of pulling weight can be shot at targets in the youth or adult range. Additionally, only arrows with field or target points can be used or owned on the range. No arrowhead may be possessed on the firing range, except with permission.
The archery range is close to several schools that participate in the National School Archery Program and is a good location for Saratoga County and DEC 4H archery lessons. There are many rules for people who wish to take advantage of the archery range, and you can view the rules on thThe DEC website.
