The venerable RuneScape game remains popular today, and is known for its many weapon choices. One of the many weapons you can craft in the game is the crossbow, and there are a few variations available. Crossbows are not only used for killing, but also for accessing shortcuts.

If you want to learn how to craft a crossbow in RuneScape, you’ve come to the right place. Here you will find the instructions and some additional useful information. We’ll also cover some questions you might have about RuneScape.

Crossbows in RuneScape

Crossbows are used in ranged combat and require progress in remote fight before you can use them. In RuneScape, looking like real weapons, crossbows shoot bolts and bows shoot arrows. In the game there are three main variations of crossbows; main hand, free hand and two handed.

The first two are wielded with one hand, and the main crossbow can be paired with a shield. If you want to wield both, you can also equip a Freehand Crossbow. Two handed crossbows are obviously going to need both hands, so a shield is out of the question.

Left-handed crossbows deal about half the damage of main-handed crossbows, and two-handed crossbows can deal more damage than their one-handed counterparts. As such, by equipping one of the two, you can increase your damage compared to the main hand variant alone.

You can also shoot mithril grapples with a crossbow to use agility shortcuts. Hand-held crossbows also allow you to shoot them to fight against objects. Since these grapples do occasionally break, you should have a little more on your character just in case.

RuneScape: How to make a crossbow?

With the basic introduction out of the way, let’s take a look at how to craft a crossbow. Since there are many types, we’ll start with a simpler example, the bronze crossbow. Make sure all the ingredients are ready.

Follow the steps to make a bronze crossbow:

  1. In RuneScape, you need to cut a log and create a bronze bar if you don’t have one yet.
  2. If you are near a smithy, you can make a bronze bar.
  3. Use the bronze bar to craft crossbow limbs.
  4. After that, turn your logs into a crossbow butt.
  5. Combine the two in an unstrung bronze crossbow.
  6. Kill a cow and get raw beef.
  7. Go to a range and turn raw beef into tendon.
  8. Locate a spinning wheel, then turn your tendon into a crossbow string.
  9. Use the crossbow string on the bronze crossbow and you will now have a strung bronze crossbow.

In step 9, you can choose whether you want to craft a Main Hand Crossbow, Left Hand Crossbow, or Two Hand Crossbow. You can repeat the same steps for all variations and choose the variation you want at the end. This will allow you to use the double and create more experiences.

Different crossbows require different materials. For example, higher level crossbows like a runic crossbow require you to chop yew logs and mine for runite ore and luminite. These materials are often more difficult to obtain than the ingredients for lower level crossbows.

The steps are also very similar. You have to turn the Yew logs into stocks and forge a runic bar to create the limbs. Picking sinews or tree roots for the crossbow string is similar, although some enemies like Guard Captain New Varrock abandon them.

Enemy drops can also produce powerful crossbows. The Armadyl crossbow is dropped by Commander Zilyana, and other enemies like Bree, Growler, and Starlight drop them as well. However, these three have slimmer drop chances, making Commander Zilyana the better option.

Requirements for crafting crossbows in RuneScape

Since RuneScape is a game full of grinding, you need to know that before you can craft a crossbow you need to have experience and levels in various skill areas. If you don’t have enough levels for Fletching, you won’t be able to craft the crossbow you want. Besides the Fletching skill, you should also have higher blacksmithing and mining skills.

Fletching is formed by creating bow strings, arrows, bolts, bows and crossbows. The more you earn, the faster you level up in Fletching. Forging and mining are formed by constantly mining ores and forging objects such as bars and swords, among many other metal objects.

You must also have the tools of the trades as well. Everyone in RuneScape already has a knife to use and craft. However, you need pickaxes and chisels if you want to mine and craft bolt tips, respectively.

Making crossbow bolts

Now that you have crafted a crossbow you must have ammo on you or the crossbow becomes useless in combat. For our example, we’ll teach you how to make steel bolts. These bolts can be used in steel crossbows and higher for maximum damage, but weaker crossbows will apply a damage cap, reducing their effectiveness.

To make steel bolts, follow these steps:

  1. Collect feathers by killing chickens or other creatures and enemies.
  2. Mine for iron ore and coal.
  3. Melt iron ore and coal into steel bars in a smithy.
  4. Make unfinished steel bolts from the steel bars.
  5. Combine feathers and unfinished bolts to make complete steel bolts.
  6. These steel bolts can now be loaded into crossbows for combat.

Different bolts require different ores, although all require feathers. Mithril bolts are made of mithril bars, and onyx bolts are onyx tipped runic bolts. With so many different requirements, you should have a plentiful supply of ore and more to be able to create them.

Your Fletching, Mining, Crafting, and Smithing skills should be at the highest levels, otherwise you won’t be able to craft these powerful bolts.

Some bolts cannot be crafted, but you can get them as drops from various enemies. You can also enchant other bolts before combining them with other materials to produce a new type of bolt. Onyx Bolts are an example of the latter, which means your magic level needs to be very high before you are allowed to create them.

Are crossbows good weapons?

As long as bows and crossbows are in the same level, they deal the same amount of damage, so you don’t want to wonder which weapon is better. Crossbows are good weapons, but not for the reason you’d expect – some enemies are weaker at bolts than at arrows.

Take the Green dragon for example. The Green Dragon is weak against crossbow bolts and Scourge ammo. While Bane ammo also includes arrows, you’re not limited to using Dragonbane arrows to fight the green dragon. Almost any bolt comparable to the arrows you use will outrank them.

Since you have nothing to worry about when using crossbows, the Green Dragon is much easier for a crossbow bearer than an archer. All of your bolts will do their best damage, if they hit, and dual wielding lets you deal more damage at once.

Additional FAQs

Let’s take a look at some common questions about RuneScape:

Are RuneScape and Old School RuneScape the same game?

Although they share the same name, the new RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape are now very different. The new version features complex fights, better graphics, better boss fights and focuses on PVE. In contrast, Old School RuneScape has simpler combat, is easier to perform even on weaker computers, and is better for those who enjoy PVP action.

That’s not to say that one is inherently better than the other, but new players would prefer RuneScape 3, while veteran players will like Old School RuneScape more. They tend to be very nostalgic for its player base.

Is RuneScape free?

Yes, it is free to play for everyone. However, if you purchase a membership you get access to eight additional skills, over 120 additional quests, and the entire map. That said, there are some perks of playing the game without paying up front.

There will be fewer options to choose from, so you can level up and learn how to play the game at a basic level. When you feel like moving forward, you can purchase the membership and unlock whatever you’ve been missing out on.

Can Jagex delete inactive accounts?

No, if you are not active on RuneScape for a long time, your username is simply removed from Hiscores. You may need to bring in the company if you can’t access your old account.

Feel like a real blacksmith

Now that you know everything it takes to craft a crossbow in RuneScape, you can start upgrading your arsenal and killing creatures. There are many crossbows you can craft and obtain, and many have special attacks and functions. Collect them all and you can fight almost anything.
