FULLERTON, Calif. — (RV) The Royals upset No. 3 The Master’s University on Thursday night at the Darling Pavilion. Ana Resendiz had 29 points, while the Royals forced 20 TMU turnovers to hand the Mustangs their second loss of the season, 72-62.

The Royals edged the Mustangs with a 6-0 run to open the first quarter. The Royals’ defense has been aggressive, forcing four straight TMU turnovers. Ana Resendiz (JR/Ontario, CA) gave the Royals a ten-point, 12-2 lead, hitting back-to-back triples, the Mustangs responded with their own layup but Resendiz hit another three on the next possession to keep the Royals ahead. The Mustangs closed out the first quarter with an 8-0 run to cut the Royals’ lead to three after the first quarter.

The Mustangs continued their run in the second quarter taking the lead with two quick field goals. Jeanette Fine (FR/Las Vegas, NV) tied the match at 17-17 with a jump shot in the paint. TMU found their groove and held a lead over the Royals until Shiane Talley (SO/Rialto, CA) hit back-to-back layups to regain a three-point advantage for the Royals. The Royals continued to take advantage of shots from beyond the arc as Shailissa Jarrett (FR/Whittier, CA) and Talley hit two triples to extend the Royals’ lead to seven with 4:37 remaining in the second frame . The Mustangs chained a few shots but the Royals held a one-point lead, 31-30, before entering the locker room.

The Royals came out shooting from both ends of the pitch in the third quarter and scored 17-2 within the first five minutes of the second half. The Royals led by 14 points with a quarter to play. Casey Fust (SO/Brea, CA) opened the fourth quarter with a triple to extend the Royals’ lead to 17 points. The Mustangs attempted to cut the Royals’ lead, but time was running out in favor of the Royals. HIU continued to pressure the Mustangs and stayed ahead of the No. 3 Mustangs by at least ten throughout the fourth quarter.

Jeanette Fine finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while Shiane Talley finished with 13 points.

The Royals host Westmont on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Darling Pavilion.
