WHITE RIVER JUNCTION – The Norwich 10U and Central Vermont 12U baseball teams head to the regionals after winning their respective Vermont Cal Ripken baseball championships on Sunday at the Maxfield Sports Complex.
After opening the game with a 10-0 win over Bellows Falls on Saturday, Norwich won their title with two wins on Sunday. The No.1 seed beat North Country No.3 in the semifinals, 9-0, before overtaking the other group’s third seed, Dresden, by a score of 10-5.
South Royalton-based Central Vermont was also the seed in its half of the 12U tranche. A 12-2 winner over Lake Region No.4 in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Central Vermont ruled out Manchester No.3 in Sunday’s semifinals, 17-7, and dominated North Country, 16-11, in their championship final. .
Norwich will travel to the New England Cal Ripken Regional Tournament in Fall River, Mass., July 16-24.
The Central Vermont Regional Championship Tournament will be held in Berwick, Maine. The team launched a GoFundMe campaign hoping to raise $ 3,000 to defer travel expenses.
WOODSTOCK – Eighteen-year-old Ellis DeMars simultaneously recorded his first hole-in-one and first double leagle with just one shot from his driver on Tuesday.
DeMars, a Cardigan Mountain School graduate in Norwich, used a new TaylorMade SimMax driver on the Woodstock Country Club’s 272-yard 14th hole, par 4, for his ace. The hole is a dogleg to the left, with a descent to a landing pad and a green protected by half a dozen bunkers.
DeMars’ father, Dan, witnessed the accomplishment. Ellis DeMars recently graduated from Berkshire School in Massachusetts and is heading to the University of Colorado this fall.
